Wrap Ups

Reading Wrap Up – June 2020

So I had a bit of a weird reading month in June.

I had a slow month, only finishing 4 books in total, though I did start quite a few books, and so I am back to my bad habits and in the middle of 6 different things! I had quite an anxious, unfocussed month and didn’t do as much reading as I meant to. Initially, I felt awful and guilty about that as I hadn’t quite broken out of last month’s reading slump, but I did post on here more, gave it a revamp and made some changes, restarted posting on Instagram and did a few unboxings on there too. I also watched a LOT of Sailor Moon, and have been trying to find a balance between my hobbies and reading/reviewing. So it’s been quite nice having a little reading break even if it wasn’t intentional. When I was reading, I tried to read a variety of genres, and so I ended up enjoying everything I did read, as I’m finding I quite like a bit of variety at the moment!

I’ve also had the issue yesterday of losing all of my upcoming reviews and blog posts (including notes) because my computer died, which has been really stressful and involves rewriting them all. I’m obviously quite upset, as this is a lot of work that I need to redo, but I’m trying to focus on the fact that it could have been worse. Hopefully I will get them all re-written soon!

Books I read:

A Song Below Water by Bethany C Morrow – 4.75 Stars
I absolutely loved this book! Tavia is a Siren who can use her voice to compel and attract people, but Sirens are hated and made to live in fear as they’re only ever Black women, unlike the rest of the mythological beings we encounter throughout the book. It’s a brilliant blend of fantasy and important political and social issues, which highlighted systemic racism and the problems Black people (especially women) face in our society, as well as the importance of being yourself. I loved Effie and Tavia. They’re both incredible, strong characters and their relationship is beautiful. They may be ‘play’ sisters, but they’re definitely real sisters at heart. I loved being part of their world, and seeing them grow. Full review to come.

The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden – 5 Stars
This is the second book in the Winternight Trilogy, which I enjoyed even more than the first. I can;t say too much without giving spoilers for the first book, but I absolutely love Vasya as a character, she’s so strong, brave and I think she is incredible. This book is so full of atmosphere, from winter moments in the forest to the hustle and bustle of Moscow, I didn’t want it to end. I’m also a little in love with Morozko! This book is a gorgeous Russian inspired folklore lover’s dream!

I’ll Be The One by Lyla Lee – 5 Stars
THIS WAS SO FLIPPING GOOD! It was funny, cute and fluffy, but also covered important topics like fatphobia and homophobia (with a bi MC & other bi & lesbian characters), as well as the importance of staying true to yourself. All set against a background of K-pop competition drama- how could I resist? Skye is such an amazing character, she’s strong, fierce, determined and relentlessly pursues her dream. She’s unapologetically herself, and I had such a good time following her journey. There’s drama, an adorable romance, brilliant female friendships and a cute dog. What more could anyone want from a YA contemporary novel?! Full review to come.

Fables vol 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham (& multiple illustrators) – 4 Stars
This is the first in a series of graphic novels based on characters from fairy tales and stories. It’s a gripping murder mystery plot, with interesting characters and some absolutely gorgeous art. The premise is really interesting, and I will definitely be continuing with the series!
